Elmbridge Borough Council planning reference 2026/1902, for 82 housing units on Green Belt land at Burhill Kennels, Turners Lane, Hersham KT12 4AW, has now been submitted.
This is a call to object from Positively Hersham, in association with Hersham Community Group.
Once our natural Green Belt has been allowed for housing, it can never be replaced. This land also forms part of the River Mole catchment basin and, more importantly, it already suffers from surface water flooding for many months every year.
Any objection to any previous application, no matter how recent, will not count. You must object specifically to planning application 2026/1902.
Use your own words. Generic or petition-style objections are not appropriate. Be honest, heartfelt and passionate, and stick with genuine planning issues.
Houses on this site will be visually intrusive as a finger of development into the surrounding Green Belt, which is open to the west, south and east. You know this land. It is precious to Hersham, not to the developer.
Turners Lane is too narrow even for cars to pass easily and has a deep ditch to one side. It is not suitable for the increased commercial vehicles required for housing estates. The access road is even narrower than the requirement for roads within the housing site itself.
Every year parts of the site are under water, often for lengthy periods. The water table is such that development cannot sustain the infrastructure required to deal with surface water, which will also have a direct detrimental effect on adjoining land that also floods every year. Existing drains will not cope.
It is further from local facilities and amenities, schools and railway stations than official guidelines recommend for new developments. One daytime bus per hour does not satisfy the rules for inclusive non-car travel.
Contrary to the submitted statements, there will be a loss of many jobs, as well as numerous volunteering and therapy opportunities.
These issues are even more relevant bearing in mind the application on adjoining land for a further 62 residential units under reference 2026/0447. Positively Hersham describe the combined effect as a total of 150 units in this location, which is entirely inappropriate without proper infrastructure.

Our Newsletter 9 June 2025 made the factual observation that the fabric of The Centre is in visible decline and that 40% of the shop units have become vacant since purchase by the developers.
