Ashill Burwood Road housing proposals

Application to build on Green Belt land south of 131to 147 Burwood Road / Turners Lane, Hersham

ASHILL DEVELOPMENT SITE AREA

IS THIS OFTEN WATER-LOGGED SITE A GOOD PLACE TO BUILD HOMES?

Elmbridge Borough Council planning reference 2026/0447 for 62 housing units has now been registered. Once our natural green belt has been lost for housing, it can never be replaced. Importantly, italready suffers from surface water flooding for many months every year. If you agree that this area is unsuitable for new housing, it is vital that your objection is received by EBC as soon as possible. Any objection to any previous application, no matter how recent, will not count. You must specifically object to this planning application 2026/0447, with a guideline deadline by 8 May 2026.

There are three ways to object always quoting reference “2026/0447 Objection”:

WEBSITE: by logging onto the EBC planning portal or CLICK HERE

EMAIL: tplan@elmbridge.gov.uk
WRITE: to Planning Department, Elmbridge Borough Council, Civic Offices, High Street, Esher, KT10 9SD.

Use your own words. Generic or petition style objections are not appropriate. Be honest, heartfelt and passionate. There are many issues to raise, for example:

Land is designated Green Belt. Developers describe the land as weakly performing. This is their own interpretation and is not backed up by any EBC report generated in house or by their professional advisors. The planning history of this site, including previous applications and an appeal indicates that this is quality Green Belt and should be protected.

You know this land. It is precious to Hersham, not to the developer.

Surface water drainage. Every year parts of the site are under water, often for lengthy periods of time. The water table is such that development cannot sustain the infrastructure required to deal with surface water, which will also have a direct detrimental effect on adjoining land, which also floods every year. Existing drains and ditches will not cope.

Site is locationally unsustainable. It is further from local amenities, schools and railway stations than official guidelines recommend for new developments.

Biodiversity. This site is locally well known for wildlife diversity and proximity to protected species. It must not be lost.

PLEASE MAKE YOUR FEELINGS KNOWN.

MENTION ANYTHING YOU FEEL IS RELEVANT.

The above issues are even more relevant bearing in mind the anticipated application on adjoining land for a further 85 residential units. A total of 150 units in this location is entirely inappropriate on any measure.

Donations are welcome to fund the campaign.

Our Newsletter 9 June 2025 made the factual observation that the fabric of The Centre is in visible decline and that 40% of the shop units have become vacant since purchase by the developers.
